Company Lab Seeking Applications for “Will This Float?” Competition

The Company Lab (CO.LAB) is seeking applications for its seventh annual ‘Will This Float?’ competition, which showcases up-and-coming startup ideas in southeast Tennessee. Prospective participants must submit their business concepts by Nov. 21 to enter into consideration. The competition will take place Dec. 8 from 6—9 p.m. at the Chattanooga Zoo. Tickets cost $5 in advance or $7 at the door.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk wants to ditch clunky solar panels in favor of sleek solar roofs. Tesla Motors (NASDAQ : TSLA) and sister company SolarCity (NASDAQ : SCTY) unveiled new solar roofing tiles at an event on Friday at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. The concept behind the new technology is to make solar panels “as appealing as electric cars,” Musk told the audience.

Nashville Entrepreneurs Exceed Global Averages in Revenue and Hiring

The past six months have been good to Nashville entrepreneurs, and the next six months look even better, according to a recently released global survey of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO). Data from EO’s Fall 2016 Global Entrepreneur Indicator survey found that EO Nashville members exceeded global averages in hiring employees, generating revenue and increasing profits over the past six months. The survey also revealed that 82.7 percent of EO Nashville entrepreneurs believe that, given current economic conditions, now is a good time to start a new business in Nashville.

Nashville guitar player and singer Derrick Royer has seen too many in the music profession hang up their dreams when their day jobs keep them from performing or lure them away from their music focus with more consistent incomes. Determined to maintain their music careers, Royer, 30, and singer-songwriter Peter Matteson formed a home remodeling and landscaping business, Greenwood BAM, that allows them and about four other musicians to complement their unpredictable writing and recording schedules on their own terms.
