Local executive search firm The Buffkin Group is expanding its services and looking to bring in more business from young and emerging companies by launching a venture fund aimed at various industries. Founder and Managing Partner Craig Buffkin says Buffkin Ventures will look to make up to five investments per year in the health care, technology, digital marketing and digital media sectors. The investments will be made alongside some of the private equity and VC funds with which Buffkin works, either directly or by exchanging the firm’s fees for equity.

The University of Tennessee and five other higher education institutions in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama are ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide in terms of the number of U.S. technology patents granted in 2014, according to a new report. The UT system ranked No. 91 in the report by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association. The university received 24 “utility” patents. Vanderbilt University in Nashville ranked 41st with 55. Tennessee tied with the University of Alabama at Birmingham for the 91st slot.
Local leaders are making a call for proposals for the upcoming Startup Week, which is a five-day showcase of the city’s entrepreneurial environment. “This year’s multi-day collaborative celebration will provide an opportunity for members of the startup community to continue the conversation, exchange ideas, learn and teach,” Allison Reedy, programs and events director for The Company Lab, said in a prepared statement.
TL Connects launched in 2010 as a text marketing company that allowed users to opt-in to local text-based deals. In 2012, the idea and initial launch became TEXTLiving, an app that offered a full customer engagement platform for users to opt into text-message deals at places they visit often. Joe Brannon, Co-Founder and CEO learned through the process that the service motivated customers to visit their favorite places more frequently based on campaigns, deals and discounts.
