CO.LAB One of 88 Accelerators Awarded National Grant
The Small Business Administration announced that Chattanooga’s The Company Lab is one of 88 accelerators to earn a $50,000 grant to support regional entrepreneurial growth. More than 400 candidates applied for the funds, and a panel of more than 40 experts in entrepreneurial investment, startups, academia and economic development selected the winners.

Favor Mobile Delivery App Comes to Nashville
Residents of Nashville now have another method to allow them to not have to leave the house. Favor, a mobile delivery app whose runners are clad in blue tuxedo t-shirts, has arrived in Nashville as of this morning. According to the press release, your delivery wishes can be granted and brought to your home, office, or the park within the hour. Favors in Nashville will cost a $5 fee plus 5% of the cost of the items. But for the entire month of August, the delivery fee is $1, and all first-time customers will receive a free delivery with the promo code “NASHVEGAS.” So far, Favor has hired 25 runners for Nashville, the company’s ninth city. The app is available for both iphone and android.

MediaWorks Preview #4: Topics
The Knoxville Entrepreneur Center is hosting its second annual “MediaWorks Demo Day” on August 11 at the Square Room on Market Square. Ahead of that event, we are profiling the nine companies in the start-up accelerator. Topics, formerly named Picktographs, is one of nine companies participating in this year’s “MediaWorks” start-up accelerator program. We posed a set of questions to each of the entrepreneurs.

The EC’s  monthly SipIt! series, created in partnership with The Tennessean, highlights the entrepreneurial stories of our local Nashvillians. This month, CEO and Founder of Jackalope Brewery Bailey Spaulding shared about the early days of Jackalope. Spaulding discussed how they stuck to their vision of becoming Nashville’s brewery by challenging themselves to stay local and grow with  Nashville. The EC recently hosted the Microsoft 10 launch – a celebration of Microsoft’s local business grants. Microsoft’s COO Kevin Turner was in attendance, and in celebration of Windows 10 and the launch of the Upgrade Your world Initiative, Microsoft donated $500k to Nashville organization.

Postmates Delivery Service Expands to Nashville
The Tennessean
Delivery service Postmates has expanded to Nashville, allowing residents to order laundry detergent, shampoo or a gourmet burger to their home or office. Postmates advertises delivery for Jack’s Bar-B-Que, Fido, Rotier’s and other local restaurants, as well as general goods — school supplies, baby powder, cold medicine and soap. Consumers tap a button on their Postmates app and a courier brings their goods for at least a $5 charge.

Memphis Design Firm Reels in Partnership with Georgia Aquarium

Memphis-based digital design agency Speak Creative has landed a big one. The firm, which also has a Nashville office, recently built a new mobile app for the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere. The aquarium’s free app is available on iTunes and Google Play and includes audio for self-guided tours, a guide to the various animals on display and in-app ticket purchases.
