Position: Capital Senior Associate
Reports to: Chief Investment Officer, Launch Tennessee

Context: LaunchTN aims to make Tennessee the best state in the nation for startups by empowering a high-functioning network of resources focused on core priorities that support Tennessee’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Partnering with entrepreneur centers in eight regions and six state-wide industry partners that run mentor networks, we facilitate collaboration among entrepreneurs, investors, the private sector, industry leaders, institutions, and government entities.

We aim to stimulate the statewide economy by facilitating capital investments, growing Tennessee’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, and making startup resources easy to find to ensure sustainable growth for entrepreneurs and investors.

Position Overview: This position serves on LaunchTN’s Capital team and will play an integral role in deploying LaunchTN’s newest capital fund, InvestTN – a $70M Venture Fund dedicated to investing in Tennessee-located startups and VC funds.  The Senior Associate will assume a key position in deal review and focus on growing our pipeline of early-stage startups by sourcing and evaluating deals while activating expert and peer networks across the state. This position will elevate the experience entrepreneurs and investors have with the InvestTN Capital Team and be well-aligned and empowered to represent the team’s strategic priorities and objectives. 

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Be a professional and well-spoken representative of the InvestTN program, comfortable working with CEOs, founders, and investors in due diligence meetings and network situations.
  • Lead deal sourcing and pipeline management efforts for the Capital team – aiming to drive 100% market coverage across pre-Seed through Series A/B startup deal flow in Tennessee
  • Conduct due diligence for early-stage investments, driving deals forward with research activities including bottoms-up market sizing and analysis, references, and high-level financial analysis – producing investment briefs and memos for investment committee consideration.
  • Design and lead a sustainable and impactful portfolio management program to support new and existing LaunchTN portfolio companies – includes Impact, INCITE, and InvestTN Fund portfolio companies. 
  • Design and manage a state-wide expert network in support of a growing portfolio of startups 
  • Support in the organization and programming of events including the annual 3686 festival, Innovation Week, Southeast Capital Calls and additional events.

Plan and execute all responsibilities with a view toward:

  • Maximizing both financial returns and economic impact through a unique government-funded venture capital program,
  • Acting as an ambassador for LaunchTN & the Capital team, advocating for our vision to make Tennessee the most startup-friendly state in the nation,
  • Exercising creative, critical, and strategic thinking through deal analysis to deliver a high-quality outcome,
  • Staying current with local, national, and global market trends, expanding the Capital team’s reach and understanding of market opportunities for investment,
  • Collaborating, building trust among the team and community stakeholders,
  • Being decisive and action-oriented, and
  • Being aligned with our core values.

 

Qualifications & Potential Indicators of Success:

  • 4-Year Bachelor’s degree
  • 2-4 years work experience
    • Required: Experience with venture capital due diligence work, whether within a fund or accelerator/incubator/startup studio program. Ability to bring an analytical point of view to the table
    • Ideal: Experience working with startups and investors from an array of industries and backgrounds
  • Strong relationship skills with a high level of emotional intelligence
  • Exceptional written and oral communication abilities
    • Ideal: comfortable and confident in public-facing / networking environments
  • Excellent work ethic; ability to work both collaboratively and independently while managing multiple projects
  • Proven record of project management and ownership, fueled by an analytical mindset and strong critical thinking skills
  • Interest in expanding experience and knowledge about venture capital, entrepreneurship, and economic development

 

Compensation & Perks

Salary Pay Range: $72k – $80k

Bonus potential: Dependent on budgetary allowance and team member’s performance

401k: Flat 8% contribution

Healthcare: LaunchTN will pay 80% of individual/partner/family health insurance, dental, and vision. Plans are offered through the state of Tennessee.

Paid Time Off: 4 weeks PTO + federal holiday schedule + office closed Christmas Eve to New Year + day off during your birthday week

Other items: $90/month cell phone stipend and $50/month wellness stipend

 

Other

  • Candidates must be willing to relocate to Nashville—in-person office environment with flexibility for work-from-home days.
  • Occasional regional travel is to be expected.
