36|86: A candid conversation between the founder of Pilot and the TN governor

James Haslam III, the founder of Pilot Corporation, one of the largest privately-owned companies in the U.S., shared the stage with son Bill Haslam, Tennessee’s 49th and current Governor, to reflect on his experience creating Pilot Flying J.

The 36|86 fireside chat between father and son included business advice like the importance of recruiting talent. James Haslam remarked that when he was scaling Pilot Corp., he focused more on raising money and opening new locations sometimes at the expense of investing in intellectual capital and securing top talent. In order to find true success, according to Haslam, you must go after the best and brightest for your company—and trust and challenge them to succeed.

Watch as James Haslam III and Governor Bill Haslam discuss these lessons learned and other tips for young, aspiring entrepreneurs.
