Grow Bioplastics, a start-up built around lignin, won last night’s “Vol Court Speaker Series” pitch competition, besting four other competitors in the twice-a-year finale coordinated by the Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the University of Tennessee’s (UT) Haslam College of Business Administration. Second place went to Barboards, a company filling a growing absence of drink coasters in bars.

MB Venture Partners’ Muscuskeletal Conference to be Held this Week

The next big biotech company could be in Memphis this week, when a group of medical device startups and venture firms come to town for the 12th annual Musculoskeletal New Ventures Conference at the FedEx Institute of Technology. The Oct. 28-29 event, hosted by MB Venture Partners, will host an estimated 175 people, including promising new companies looking for funding and partnerships.

YouTube Announces Partnership with Country Music Association

The Country Music Association is doubling down on its music-tech efforts, launching a partnership with the Google-owned video sharing service YouTube. The new partnership was announcedTuesday evening by Vivian Lewit, director of artist and label partnerships at YouTube, at a party the company hosted at Pinewood Social. The party was a kick-off for the educational series that YouTube Music is launching next year in Nashville for the local music industry.
